At Best of Romagna we have a simple system - we only accept bookings from travel agents who have been on one of our FAM trips. So far in the USA there are just 50 happy members of this exclusive group. Obviously we are not in the mass market, obviously we look after our clients!
Do you think that you may like to be a Best of Romagna co-operator and make your clients happy as well as yourself after this coronavirus thing is over? If so, you’ll need to know what you will do on a FAM trip.
Mainly you’ll do a lot of fabulous eating and drinking - after all Romagna is really the heart of Italian food and wine. So every day you will eat and drink, see and experience something extra special.
Here are just four restaurants and one gelateria that we’ll certainly take you to:
Villa Venti is a biodynamic, organic vineyard at the very, very top of its game. - reccomended by both Slow Food and Slow Wine and many other prestigious international organisations. And the top of its hill too with utterly spectacular views. The wines produced by Mauro and Manuela are also spectacular. Naturally the food they serve to accompany their delicious wine has to be of the same standard. Here you’ll taste superb prosciutto, with piedina flatbread made from ancient wheat grown on the property, milled by Manuela and stuffed with her own hand pickedd herbs and nuts. You’ll eat cheeses matured by famous local affinateur Renato Brancaleone including superb squacquerone, formaggio di fossa, and parmigiano. Dessert includes Manuela’s amazing Ciambella cake. With this you’ll enjoy the estate’s Serenara (indigenous aromatic Famoso grape) and Primo Segno (indigenous Sangiovese), plus their astonishing Sangiovese red dessert wine.
Dei Cantoni is the Michelin restaurant in an ancient location - part of the soaring 13th century castle complex of Gianciotto Malatesta. Here Danilo and Teresa specialise in local seasonal food - so well that people will drive hundreds of miles just to eat there. Pasta and piadina are very special and always made fresh daily. Local specialities include truffles, game, wonderful fish and locally foraged herbs. A typical meal that you will enjoy includes an enormous starter of dried meats, cheese, piadina little toasts with delicious toppings, Passatelli (pasta made with breadcrumbs, lemon, nutmeg and parmesan - in a rich broth), mixture of grilled meats and fabulous desserts. All washed down with local Sangiovese.
La Casina is an Agriturismo. Pretty much all of their food is grown on the property, their wines and their animals too! It is a real experience orchestrated by the Valentina family led by Valentina Valentini! Enormous salvers of starters include Valentini meats and cheeses - prosciutto, coppa, culatello, salami, lardo, guanciale, Valentini bruschettas, and pickles are followed by Valentini fresh made tagliatelli, ravioli, capeletti and tortellini, followed by Valentini mixed grilled and barbequed meats and vegetables Valentini salads followed by Valentini desserts - tiramisu and zuppa inglese followed by Valentini digestives - liquerizia, banane, limoncello, and coffee! All washed down with Valentini wine - naturally.
Casa Spadoni lies beside the ancient city of Faenza - once the ultra prosperous ancient ceramic city, captured in the 15th century by Cesare Borgia using Leonardo da Vinci’s poison gas. Anyway Casa Spadoni may be Romagna’s best traditional restaurant. Mr Spadoni breeds his own pigs and cattle, mills his own flour and employs his own Michelin chef to run his massive and beautiful restaurant in an ancient silk mill. Here you will eat the very best prosciutto in the world and other spectacular cold cuts, the most delicious pasta (made from Mr Spadoni’s flour) and the most amazing meats barbequed on Mr Spadoni’s specially made cast-iron massive barbeque. Naturally you’ll drink Mr Spadoni’s own wine from his high tech free range pig farm. And afterwards enjoy both the opulent walled medieval city and the gypsum vein which leads to stunning, historic Brisighella which produces Italy’s best olive oil due to its gypsum microclimate.
Casa Artusi is a very famous name in italy. It is the foundation of Pellegrino Artusi, known as the “Father of Italian Cookery” His recipes, collected from housewives around Italy in the 19th century form the basis of each classic Italian dish. Casa Artusi is now a cookery school, where all our FAM guests learn to cook Italian. It is also a vast library of Italian cookbooks and it has two notable restaurants. For lunch, you’ll enjoy the best of the best food and drink from Emilia Romagna which is to say the best of the best of Italy! Here you’ll enjoy an exquisite meal including delicious hand made pastas and local specialities like parmesan, prosciutto and all kinds of salumi (charcuterie), mouth watering local fruits and desserts paired with splendid local wines.
We take all of our guests to Ravenna. Why? Because Ravenna, once Julius Caesar’s starting point to take Rome, once Rome’s massive eastern port and once Imperial Rome’s capital, ruled by the Empress Galla Placidia, is a true lifetime experience. This world heritage site is a jewel chest of extraordinary pristine sights – fabulous 6th century basilicas like the twin of Aghia Sophia in Istanbul (not a museum but a fully-functional church) filled with extraordinary glistening mosaics, a 5th century mausoleum stuffed with world heritage artwork and much, much, more all from the time when Ravenna was the important, world dominating city full of intrigue, spirituality, depravity and above all power.
Plus it’s got my favourite gelateria! So, after your fill of amazing art, unbelievable sights, soaking yourself in this unique, once impregnable city – a delicious gelato will come in handy if even to soothe your soul. Bio Gelato is really the best – from its ricotta mousse, its beetroot swirl, amazing byzantine cream, ginger and rhubarb and many more – unique like Ravenna.
And these are the fabulous group and FIT trips we sell only via our appointed US agents:
