 A VERY SPECIAL FAM trip to an ideal post-covid destination! I’d been writing “You Lucky People”, my book about my decades in the travel industry, and I’d wanted to visit Italy’s world heritage city Ravenna for ages. When I did, I was simply astounded. I’d heard of Ravenna’s history as Rome’s biggest eastern port and later its Imperial capital. I’d heard of its massive treasure chest of Byzantine mosaics, art and architecture - and when I saw it all it was even more stunning than I’d come to believe.  And what REALLY blew my brain was the land around this capital - the ancient state of Romagna. All the way from Bologna down the via Emilia to the coast, Romagna was full of the things that I adore. Fabulously rich cities of art and music; dozens of castles towering over vine-clad hills; a deep culture; stories, legends, myths, magic, spirituality PLUS extraordinarily good food and wine, and a level of warm courtesy and heartfelt hospitality that I thought had been lost. Everywhere in little Romagna I found signs of the great Italian families - not just the Borgias and the Medicis but also the Estes, the Malatestas, the Montefeltros, the Svorzas and more - with massive histories and amazingly lusty appetites. No wonder they made beautiful Romagna their playground!  And we do too!  No wonder, as a travel professional, committed to better, healthier, forms of tourism - I determined then to share this nirvana with like-minded travel agents around the world.
