After all these social distances your clients don’t just want a holiday, or a cruise - they want a real 2021 experience - and I’m sure you do too!

More and more discerning travel agents are discovering that beautiful, safe Romagna, in the heart of Italy fits their post-covid bill.

At Best of Romagna we have a simple system - we only accept bookings from travel agents who have been on one of our FAM trips. So far in the USA there are just 50 happy members of this exclusive group who have discovered the Best of Romagna. Obviously we are not in the mass market, obviously we look after our clients!

But in the last week or so, it looks like that 50 will certainly increase according to the emails that we’re getting, but we are definitely not looking to get into three figures!

Do you think that you may like to discover Best of Romagna too, be a Best of Romagna co-operator and make your clients happy as well as yourself after this coronavirus thing is over? If so, you’ll need to know what you will do on a FAM trip.

Well, in our last email we said that we spend a lot of time on our FAM trips on exquisite food and wine - read about it here. HERE "Your personal invitation to the very best Italian meals you'll ever have and more:

The reason for all this is that we love to create, with you, not just a travel offer but a unique experience that you and your clients will remember with great affection and happiness. Judging by our social media and our mailbox we’re pretty successful at it.

To us, experiences are made of truly authentic unique and memorable tastes, places, people, and stories. Romagna is overfull of them. Here are just a few examples:
Picture
Ever heard of Squacquerone? Formaggio di fossa? Piadina? Passatelli? Albana? Mora Romagnola?
Picture
Ever heard af Dozza or Cervia?
Picture
Ever heard of Gallla Placidia or Pandolfo Malatesta?
Picture
Ever heard of Paolo and Francesca?

Well I’ll keep you in suspense no longer! The first two are Romagna cheeses one so fresh and delicious it can’t be exported, the second traditionally ripened in pits and very tangy. Piadina is an addictive flatbread now honored as a DOP. Passatelli is a pasta made with breadcrumbs, parmesan, nutmeg, egg and lemon and served in a food-of-the-gods broth, Albana is the ancient wine of Romagna - the first white wine in Italy to be designated DOCG. And Mora Romangnola is a perfect old breed of pig that everyone in Romagna truly cherishes.

Dozza is very interesting. It is one of many Romagna old walled castle towns (castle belonging to the infamous Caterina Sforza) it’s now the showcase for all wines of Emilia Romagna and more. Plus this city of art’s walls are the canvasses for its biannual art fair. Cervia, on the other hand, is the beautiful ancient Adriatic port that has provided the Pope’s sweet salt for over 500 years.

The Empress Galla Placidia has a massive and very important story - she ruled the Roman and the Gothic Empire from Romagna’s Ravenna and left behind fabulous basilicas and her mausoleum just stuffed with the most gorgeous mosaics ever. When? 1500 years ago! They still look like new. Naturally the city is a major world heritage site.

You’ve heard of Cesare Borgia and Lorenzo di Medici - Pandolfo Malatesta was one of the same ilk at the same time in the same region. A massive robber baron and mercenary, he fostered art and architecture (and religion!) even was painted by Piero della Francesca. Started the first public library in 1454 (still there you’ll see it!)

Romagna’s Paolo and Francesca got into Dante’s classic medieval Divine Comedy, they were the inspiration for Rodin’s “The Kiss” amongst many other globally-esteemed works of art. According to Dante they are both still in hell! What a story!

You and your clients will taste, hear and see all the above - and more as part of their experiences and on top of that you’ll all learn to cook Italian at “The best cookery school in Italy” plus experience our Venice, Florence and Ravenna!

Plus we will look after you all in the ideal safe post covid beautiful safe historic environment!

Tourism in the 2020s – will it delight or devastate the human race?
New book starts at the beginning and predicts the next 60 years of tourism.

In 1960 did we believe that an international travel industry would increase from just 25 million passengers a year to 1.5 billion?

Did we believe that the economic opportunities promoted by dictator Franco’s government would sweep the world, promoted by the World Bank?

Did we believe that travel would become both a friend and a foe to many destinations and that it would help to threaten our Earth’s ecosystems, cultures, economies, society as a whole?

If we didn’t believe all that then, what do we believe now?

You Lucky People sets out the past, the present and a future for tourism - all very irreverently!

Could global tourism be totally subject to Chinese demands, could it become entirely virtual, could it be so hampered by world disturbances, diseases, violence in destinations and other curses that it could change its nature dramatically. Could it actually be stopped because of its environmental and social damage?

Or ... could it be managed harmoniously and effectively by local destinations and marketed by really responsible business entrepreneurs so that its great benefits could be available to many more millions?

The author, Valère Tjolle, has been in the travel industry for almost all of these last 60 years. His story is that of real experience in the industry all over the world, and in-depth understandings and involvements with all the innovations and transformations over that period.

It was his annual Sustainable Tourism Report that pointed to the growth potential of the ‘Sharing Economy’ and tipped every other major development; his Greenwash Report that rated companies and activities according to their actual sustainability performance; his Global Top 100 Sustainable Destinations that picked out the real destination winners

From the ‘Mom and Pop’ businesses of the 50s through the devil-may-care entrepreneurs of the last decades of the 20th century to the massively powerful tech businesses of today - the real story of the travel industry is pithily portrayed with humour and realism.

‘You Lucky People’ is not an academic history of the industry - it is a warts-and-all story of a deep insider’s experience at the heart of the industry.
